The 3 Golden Rules For Carpet Care

Carpet care is undoubtedly the most important job of any professional cleaning company in Australia. As a professional cleaner, it is our responsibility to explain to our clients how they can properly take care of their carpets.

So, what do you tell your client when you go on a carpet cleaning job?

Carpet care is very important for because….

  • To maintain the life of the carpet
  • To safeguard from germs leading to diseases arising from unmaintained carpets
  • To get rid of bugs and beetles
  • To prevent mould formation

But the thing is – while we are trying to explain every benefit of carpet care, many carpet cleaning companies face a challenge to themselves – what cleaning method do I use for this job?

The goal of carpet cleaners everywhere is to get carpet as clean and as dry as possible. Sometimes this takes what some say are “radical” cleaning methods. After all, complete and effective carpet cleaning is often “custom cleaning” – so there isn’t always a ‘right’ answer available when it comes to the best cleaning method you should use.

The Top 3 Carpet Care Methods

1. Encapsulation

Low-moisture encapsulation is emerging fast as a leading technology in periodic carpet maintenance worldwide. Professional cleaners enjoy making use of the “cleaning pie” – that is, T.A.C.T (temperature, agitation, chemical and time).

Encapsulation cleaning makes good use of the cleaning pie. While the temperature is not as high for encapsulation cleaning (with the exception of Encap rinses used with hot water extraction), and some of the time (pre-conditioning dwell time, especially) is less than some other methods, the agitation and chemical aspect of encapsulation cleaning is so effective that you’ll never miss a beat with this method of cleaning.

orbot-largeEncapsulation is required every once in a while to keep carpets free from oily type soils which cannot be easily prevented through vacuuming.

Cleaning solutions like PowerClean’s CleanCap are applied on the carpet either a shampoo fed or sprayed via a Sprayborg setup or pressurized sprayer. After a thorough agitation via a Fibreplus pad underneath the Orbot, Cimex or Rotary Scrubber, the CleanCap then surrounds the soil particles and dries to a crystal which can be vacuumed away easily during subsequent vacuumings. Encapsulation is a proven method to improve carpet appearance.

Experts say that encapsulation technology shortens dry times compared to other methods due to being a low moisture process.

2. Dry Cleaning (Bonnet Cleaning)

Bonnet Cleaning is the easiest known way of cleaning carpets that need interim cleaning techniques. It consists running a cotton bonnet like SuperZorb underneath a Orbot or Rotary Scrubber. Carpets have to be presprayed first with quality dry cleaning presprays like Releasit Punch.  Next, the pad is attached to the Orbot machine which is used to transfer the suspended soil onto the bonnet. The pad will absorb this soil from the top of the pile making the carpet look clean. It is considered an interim carpet cleaning method used to maintain appearance levels, but it does not restore carpet appearance as well as other carpet cleaning methods.

3. Truck Mounted Hot Water Extraction

Research indicates that the hot water extraction system provides the best capability for cleaning. Most carpet mills recommend this method for full restorative cleaning. This system is commonly referred to as “steam cleaning”,  consists of applying a cleaning agent into the carpet pile and using water injected through the fibre under pressure and extracted to remove the used solution and soil.  This can be done from a truck-mounted unit outside the home with only the hose and wand brought inside or by a portable system brought into the home.

Carpets must be cleaned at least once a year with suitable truck mounted hot water extraction methods. For public areas, like schools, libraries, shopping centres, etc. it is recommended to use truck mounts for hot water extraction twice a year. This can be joined with interim low moisture Encapsulation depending on the type of soiling, the traffic load on the carpeting, budget considerations, and other indoor and outdoor environmental conditions.
